Asawase, Kumasi – July 23, 2025
A revered traditional leader from the Kusasi ethnic group, known for his peaceful demeanor and strong ties with the Zongo community in the Ashanti Region, was tragically shot and killed at his private residence in Asawase in the early hours of Tuesday.

The victim, identified by community members as Chief Issah Bukari, had been residing in Asawase for over two decades, serving as a unifying figure among the Kusasi population in the region. According to initial reports, unidentified assailants stormed his residence late at night and opened fire, leaving the chief fatally wounded.

Eyewitnesses described hearing multiple gunshots around 1:30 AM, followed by loud screams from the household. The attackers are said to have fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Emergency responders rushed Chief Bukari to the Manhyia Government Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

???? Police Launch Full Investigation

The Ashanti Regional Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack. No arrests have been made so far, but authorities say CCTV footage from nearby homes and businesses is being reviewed.

"We are treating this as a targeted attack," said ACP Charles Owusu, spokesperson for the regional police. "We urge the public to remain calm as we intensify our investigations and call on anyone with credible information to come forward.”

???? Community in Mourning

The news of Chief Bukari’s death has cast a pall over the local Zongo communities, especially the Kusasi settlers in the Ashanti Region. Religious and tribal leaders have condemned the act, calling it not only a loss to the Kusasi people but to the entire peace-building efforts within the region.

"He was a pillar of wisdom, dialogue, and peace. His death is a tragedy that has deeply shaken us all," said Sheikh Abdul Mumin, a local imam and close associate of the deceased chief.

Security has since been heightened in Asawase and neighboring suburbs, with increased police visibility in an attempt to deter any retaliatory actions or unrest.

????️ Regional Authorities React

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah, expressed his condolences and pledged the government’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.

"We will not allow violence to define leadership in our communities. Justice will be pursued with the full weight of the law," he stated during a brief press appearance.

???? Background on Kusasi in Ashanti Region

The Kusasi people, predominantly from Ghana’s Upper East Region, have a growing presence in parts of the Ashanti Region, including Asawase, largely due to interregional migration for trade and religious leadership. Chiefs like Bukari have played vital roles in bridging cultural gaps between the north and south.
