Finance Minister to Establish Compliance Desk to Enforce New Public Financial Management Act
Ghana’s Finance Minister has announced plans to establish a dedicated compliance desk to ensure the effective enforcement of the newly updated Public Financial Management (PFM) Act, aiming to improve transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline in public sector operations.
Accra, Ghana – The Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has revealed plans to set up a compliance desk within the Ministry to monitor and enforce provisions of the newly amended Public Financial Management Act.
The initiative, according to the Minister, is aimed at addressing persistent issues of non-compliance, financial irregularities, and inefficiencies in the use of public funds across government institutions.
Speaking at a financial governance summit in Accra, Dr. Amin Adam emphasized that the desk will function as a watchdog and advisory unit to ensure public institutions adhere strictly to the fiscal rules and guidelines outlined in the new law.
“We must move from making laws to enforcing them. The compliance desk will track spending patterns, assess risk, and guide MDAs to stay within budgetary limits,” the Minister stated.
He added that the compliance team will be equipped with digital tools to track real-time expenditure and support training for financial officers within Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The revised PFM Act, passed earlier this year, includes stricter penalties for financial misreporting, introduces digital audits, and enhances parliamentary oversight of public spending.
