The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has issued a strong appeal for calm in the wake of renewed violence in the troubled town of Bawku, located in the Upper East Region.
In a statement released over the weekend, the Minority expressed deep concern over the latest outbreak of violence, which has reportedly claimed lives and displaced residents. They emphasized the need for de-escalation, dialogue, and urgent intervention from the government and security agencies.
“We are deeply saddened by the resurgence of violence in Bawku. The continued loss of life and destruction of property is unacceptable,” the statement read. “We urge residents to remain calm and allow state institutions to carry out their duties.”
The Minority further called on the Interior Ministry and the National Security apparatus to deploy more resources, engage traditional leaders, and intensify peacebuilding efforts in the area.
This comes after multiple reports of gunshots, curfews, and roadblocks paralyzing daily life in Bawku. Schools have closed, markets remain deserted, and fear grips the community.
Civil society groups have echoed the Minority's concerns, warning that without decisive government action, the conflict may spiral further out of control.
The situation remains tense, but leaders insist that the path to peace must be paved with dialogue, justice, and a genuine commitment to long-term reconciliation.
