Camidoh explains why he ditched rapping to focus on singing

Accra, Ghana — July 24, 2025 — Ghanaian Afrobeats and R&B sensation Camidoh has provided new insight into his creative evolution, revealing that he largely abandoned rapping to lean into his strengths as a vocalist.

While appearing on Ghana Weekend TV, the “Sugarcane” hitmaker affirmed he is capable of rapping, saying, “I’m a good rapper,” but added that if invited to perform on platforms like Tim Westwood’s show, he would rather sing than rap . This modesty reflects a broader artistic shift toward melody-driven music.

Camidoh’s early fascination with music emerged not from rap, but from artists like Akon, whose singing style profoundly influenced his musical direction. Initially aspiring to become a pilot, he realized his calling lay with melody when he discovered he could sing

In press interviews, he emphasized that his management encouraged him not to chase hits, but to let his authentic singing voice guide him. He believes good songs naturally find their audience without forcing rap merely for popularity

Camidoh explained that he only creates music when genuinely inspired, choosing topics connected to personal or emotional experiences. He stated, “I make songs that I’m inspired to do,” focusing on themes of life and love rather than adopting rap as a stylistic trend

Throughout his journey, he has also prioritized mental wellness—actively pursuing therapy to navigate personal trauma and creative pressures. This introspective process has helped him center his artistry on sincerity rather than shock value or controversy

Why This Shift Matters

  • Artistic Identity: Camidoh has positioned himself as a vocalist, making clear artistic decisions around melody, emotion, and authenticity.

  • Brand Differentiation: In a market saturated with rap, singing gives him a unique sound and a distinct place among Ghanaian musicians.

  • Sustainable Success: Instead of chasing virality, he opts for sustained relevance through genuine expression.

  • Mental Clarity: Prioritizing healing and introspection has clarified his creative path and personal authenticity.

What to Look For

  • New Releases: Expect more vocally driven songs exploring love, emotion, and life experiences.

  • Potential Genre Expansion: He may branch into R&B or soul where his voice can stand out.

  • Collaborations: Future work may reflect synergy with artists and producers who value vocal artistry.
