Asiedu Nketia Demands Jean Mensa’s Removal Over Electoral Concerns

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has publicly demanded the removal of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa. His call comes amidst rising concerns over the Commission’s transparency, alleged bias, and what he describes as attempts to manipulate electoral processes in favor of the ruling government. The NDC believes that under Jean Mensa’s leadership, the EC has lost the confidence of the Ghanaian electorate, posing a significant threat to the credibility of the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Asiedu Nketia Demands Jean Mensa’s Removal Over Electoral Concerns

Accra, Ghana –
In a sharp rebuke of Ghana’s electoral management, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has demanded the immediate removal of Jean Mensa as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Speaking at a press conference, Asiedu Nketia accused the Jean Mensa-led EC of operating with bias, citing recent voter registration exercises that, according to the NDC, were marred by systemic irregularities, limited access in strong opposition regions, and lack of stakeholder consultation.

“We cannot trust an electoral body that dances to the tunes of the ruling party. The Electoral Commission under Jean Mensa has become an instrument of voter suppression,” Nketia stated.

He highlighted what he called a “deliberate agenda” to disenfranchise opposition voters by reducing registration centers in NDC strongholds and implementing measures without parliamentary oversight. The NDC argues that this not only undermines Ghana’s democratic principles but also sets a dangerous precedent for future elections.

The NDC is calling on civil society organizations, religious bodies, and the international community to intervene and help restore confidence in Ghana’s electoral process. They are also exploring legal avenues to challenge the EC’s recent decisions.

This demand follows mounting criticism of the EC’s approach to voter registration, including concerns raised by independent observers and some political analysts who warn that credibility gaps in the Commission could destabilize the 2024 election cycle.

Despite the allegations, the Electoral Commission has consistently defended its actions, asserting that all procedures followed are lawful and geared toward ensuring credible elections.

Asiedu Nketia, however, insists that the only way forward is for Jean Mensa to step down or be relieved of her duties, allowing for a more neutral and transparent leadership ahead of the crucial polls.
