Give priority to sports people for recruitment – Prez Mahama tells Minister of Interior
Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged the Minister of Interior to give special consideration to Ghanaian athletes—especially national sportsmen and women—during recruitment into the country’s security services, citing their discipline, patriotism, and physical readiness.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Minister of Interior to give priority to sportsmen and women during security service recruitments, noting that such a move would both recognize their national sacrifices and harness their discipline and physical fitness in public service.
The call came during his address at a national sports development forum in Accra, where Mahama emphasized the role of sports in nation-building, unity, and youth empowerment.
“Our national athletes—especially those who represent us at regional and international competitions—demonstrate extraordinary discipline, courage, and commitment. It is only right that we support their transition into meaningful careers after active sports,” Mahama stated.
He argued that with many athletes facing unemployment after their careers, integrating them into structured service roles such as the Ghana Police Service, Immigration, Prisons Service, Fire Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces would provide stability while retaining talent for the nation’s benefit.
Mahama’s statement has been met with widespread support from the sporting community, many of whom feel overlooked despite bringing pride to Ghana on the world stage.
“We don’t ask for handouts—just opportunities,” said a national long-distance runner who recently aged out of Ghana’s athletics program. “We train like soldiers, and we’re ready to serve the country in new ways.”
Policy analysts also say such a move could reduce youth unemployment, curb crime, and give young athletes a viable career pathway beyond sports.
Some have also recommended that the Interior Ministry work with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to create a formal quota or talent absorption framework for former athletes into civil or military service.
