Bawumia Proposes Expansion of NPP Delegate System to Boost Electoral Participation Ahead of 2028

Speaking at a gathering of party faithful at the NPP Headquarters in Accra on April 23, 2025, Dr. Bawumia stated that expanding the NPP’s delegate system will be a key priority as the party prepares to amend its constitution in the coming years.

“You can expect without any doubt that the delegate system is going to change. We will expand it to allow more of our members to participate in choosing presidential candidates and party officers,” he declared.

Rebuilding from Within: Lessons from 2024 Defeat

Dr. Bawumia’s comments come in the aftermath of the party’s electoral loss in 2024—a defeat he attributes primarily to voter apathy within NPP ranks. According to him, despite extensive campaigning and strategic efforts, the party lost due to internal disengagement.

“If you compare the numbers from 2020 to 2024, you’ll see that 2.1 million of our supporters simply did not turn out to vote,” he revealed.
“That alone explains the loss. The key to victory was, and still is, within the NPP. If we mobilize ourselves properly and everyone participates, we will win.”

Inclusive Reforms on the Horizon

The proposed delegate system reform is part of a broader effort to re-energize the party base, reconnect with disillusioned supporters, and broaden internal democratic participation. By expanding the voting pool for internal party elections, the NPP aims to make the process more transparent, inclusive, and representative of its grassroots membership.

This move is also expected to build party loyalty and increase voter turnout in future national elections by fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment among rank-and-file members.

What’s Next for the NPP?

With constitutional amendments on the table, the NPP leadership is expected to engage stakeholders across all regions in shaping the future of the party’s internal governance. These reforms, party insiders suggest, will be critical to uniting the base, avoiding voter fatigue, and positioning the NPP as a revitalized force come 2028.

As Ghana’s political landscape begins to shift post-2024, Bawumia’s remarks signal a new chapter of introspection and renewal within one of the country’s major political parties.
