Education Minister Seeks Qatari Support to Establish Ghana’s First Islamic Medical School

Accra, Ghana –
In a bold initiative to bridge the gap between faith and science, Ghana’s Minister of Education has appealed to the government of Qatar for financial assistance to establish the country’s first Islamic Medical School.

The proposed institution is envisioned as a key step toward integrating Islamic values with modern medical training. It will serve to accommodate aspiring Muslim medical students who seek an academic environment that aligns with their religious and cultural identity, while also helping to meet Ghana’s growing demand for healthcare professionals.

Speaking during a diplomatic engagement, the Education Minister emphasized the broader benefits of the project, noting its potential to foster religious inclusion, international collaboration, and human capital development in the healthcare sector.

“This is not just about building another medical school. It’s about creating opportunities, respecting diversity, and strengthening Ghana-Qatar relations through a shared commitment to education and development,” the Minister stated.

The request comes at a time when Ghana is working to expand its health infrastructure and address critical gaps in doctor-to-patient ratios, especially in underserved regions. The proposed Islamic Medical School would complement existing institutions while also contributing to interfaith harmony and educational equity.

Qatar, known for its philanthropic support in education and healthcare across the globe, has yet to officially respond. However, the initiative is being seen by policy watchers as a strategic appeal that aligns with Qatar’s global soft power agenda.

If successful, the school could become a flagship institution, not only in Ghana but across West Africa, offering medical degrees rooted in both scientific excellence and Islamic ethics.
