Accra, Ghana –
Black Stars debutant Caleb Yirenkyi has heaped praise on former Ghana international Michael Essien, describing him as an “impactful” coach whose mentorship has helped elevate his understanding of the game.
Speaking after his impressive debut in the Unity Cup 2025, Yirenkyi revealed that Essien has been a quiet but powerful presence behind his recent progress.
“Essien is a good coach — someone who can impact anyone, not just with words but with how he thinks about the game,” Yirenkyi said in an exclusive chat with Top Knowledge TV.
Essien, who is currently building his coaching career in Europe after hanging up his boots, has been spotted mentoring a number of young Ghanaian players, both in and outside the national team system. His work ethic, tactical IQ, and global football experience make him a respected figure among Ghana’s next generation.
Mutual Respect
Yirenkyi, who plays club football in Belgium, disclosed that even brief conversations or training sessions with Essien helped him think differently as a defender.
“He challenges you to be smarter, to anticipate, and to stay calm under pressure. That kind of guidance is rare,” he added.
Essien has often advocated for stronger developmental pathways for young Ghanaian talents, and it seems his quiet efforts are already bearing fruit in players like Yirenkyi.
The Bigger Picture
With the Ghana Football Association seeking to revamp youth coaching structures, Yirenkyi’s testimonial may renew calls to formally involve legends like Essien in national coaching setups.
For now, Caleb is just grateful for the influence.
“He doesn’t need to say much. Just being around him is enough to raise your level,” he concluded.
