Gregory Afoko Granted Bail After Nearly 10 Years on Remand for murder
In a landmark decision, an Accra High Court has granted bail to Gregory Afoko, who has spent almost a decade on remand for the alleged murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama.
Arrested in May 2015, Afoko was accused of conspiring in an acid attack that led to Mahama’s death. His prolonged detention, without a final conviction, had drawn widespread concerns over due process and human rights violations.
On Friday, February 21, 2025, the court ruled that Afoko’s continued incarceration was unjustifiable, particularly given the protracted nature of the trial. He was granted bail set at GHS 2 million with two sureties, including a public servant, and must surrender his passport while reporting to authorities at designated intervals.
The ruling has ignited debate on Ghana’s criminal justice system, with legal experts questioning why a suspect remained in detention for nearly 10 years without resolution. Meanwhile, the family of Adams Mahama insists that justice is yet to be served, urging the prosecution to expedite proceedings.
As the case unfolds, Afoko’s release highlights critical issues of judicial efficiency, the right to fair trial, and legal accountability in Ghana.
