Mahama Pledges to Improve Working and Living Conditions of Teachers
Former President John Mahama has assured the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) of his dedication to improving the living and working conditions of educators. He emphasized that quality education cannot thrive without well-supported teachers.

Accra, Ghana –
Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his commitment to improving the welfare of teachers across Ghana. Addressing the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mahama promised a renewed focus on education sector reforms that prioritize the well-being of educators.
Mahama acknowledged the pivotal role teachers play in shaping national development and stressed the need to reward their efforts with better working conditions, adequate remuneration, and continuous professional training.
“Teachers are the backbone of every nation’s future. Without motivated and well-supported teachers, our goals for quality education will remain out of reach,” Mahama stated during the engagement.
He outlined his plans to reinstate key incentives removed by the current administration, including book and research allowances, professional development grants, and timely promotion structures. Mahama also hinted at revising the single spine salary structure to better reflect the evolving demands of the teaching profession.
His assurance comes at a time when teacher unions have voiced dissatisfaction with their conditions of service, citing delays in promotions, unpaid allowances, and poor infrastructure in schools, particularly in rural areas.
GNAT leadership welcomed the gesture and expressed hope that the promises would be fulfilled should Mahama return to office.
The meeting forms part of Mahama’s broader outreach to key stakeholders in the education sector ahead of the 2024 general elections.
