The historic event will be spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama, who will lead the opening ceremony of the 50th Anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The ceremony is expected to welcome dignitaries, government officials, and ministers from all fifteen ECOWAS Member States, making it one of the most significant regional gatherings of the year.

According to a statement released by ECOWAS, “The President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani MAHAMA, will kick off the activities planned as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS.” This launch event will include a vibrant display of regional unity and culture, with artistic performances, the unveiling of the official Golden Jubilee logo and theme, and storytelling presentations tracing the journey of ECOWAS since its establishment.

A Celebration of Unity and Progress

Founded on May 28, 1975 in Lagos, Nigeria, ECOWAS has grown to become one of Africa’s most influential and well-organized regional economic communities. With a vision of fostering economic integration, peace, and development among West African nations, ECOWAS has played a pivotal role in promoting regional cooperation, cross-border trade, peacekeeping, and democratic governance.

The Accra launch will highlight the organization’s achievements, reforms, and milestones, recounting its evolution from the vision of the Founding Fathers to the dynamic institution it is today.

A Year-Long Jubilee Across West Africa

In line with the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government’s directive, the 50th anniversary celebrations will not be limited to Ghana. Instead, the launch in Accra will set the tone for similar events to be held across all Member States throughout the year.

In February 2025, the ECOWAS Administrative and Financial Committee met virtually to approve a region-wide program of activities. These events are designed to boost visibility and promote regional awareness about ECOWAS’s mission, impact, and future direction.

As Ghana takes the lead in this celebration, the spotlight will not only shine on Accra but also on the resilience, unity, and aspirations of the West African people. The launch of the Golden Jubilee is expected to renew commitment among Member States to the ECOWAS vision of a more integrated and prosperous region.
