Tensions flared in Ghana’s Parliament on Tuesday as the Minority Caucus staged a dramatic walkout in protest of the continued detention of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. The protest followed a heated debate over the involvement of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in what the Minority described as a politically motivated investigation.
The NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman has reportedly been held for questioning over alleged financial irregularities involving mining licenses and political financing. While EOCO has remained tight-lipped on the specifics of the probe, the Minority has condemned what they call a “witch-hunt disguised as accountability.”
“This is a clear abuse of power aimed at intimidating political opponents,” Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson said before leading his caucus out of the chamber.
The protest disrupted Parliamentary business temporarily, forcing the Speaker to call for calm.
Afenyo-Markin Hits Back at EOCO
In a rare move, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin also criticized EOCO’s conduct, calling it “procedurally flawed” and potentially damaging to democratic institutions. Though a senior member of the ruling NPP, Afenyo-Markin expressed concerns that the agency’s handling of the situation lacked transparency and undermined public confidence.
“If EOCO believes in rule of law, it must adhere to due process and avoid arbitrary detention,” he stated during a press briefing.
Political Fallout Looms
The incident has deepened political divisions, raising questions about the balance between anti-corruption efforts and political victimization. Civil society organizations have also weighed in, calling for clarity from EOCO and restraint from all political actors.
As of this report, Chairman Wontumi remains in custody, with legal teams preparing to challenge the basis of his detention in court.
