This is e-levy promax; is this the reset they promised? – Minority on new GH¢1 fuel levy

The Minority in Parliament has fiercely criticized the government’s introduction of a new GH¢1 levy on fuel, branding it as nothing short of “E-Levy Pro Max” and a betrayal of the so-called economic reset promised by the ruling administration.

The controversial levy, announced as part of new fiscal measures, has sparked widespread backlash from transport unions, economists, and the political opposition, who argue that the move will worsen the cost of living for ordinary Ghanaians already struggling under inflation and stagnant wages.

“This is not a reset—it’s a relapse. If the government calls this recovery, then Ghanaians are in trouble,” said Minority Spokesperson on Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson.

⛽ The Fuel Burden Just Got Heavier

The GH¢1 fuel levy is expected to take effect in the coming weeks and will apply to every litre of petrol and diesel sold nationwide. Analysts predict it could lead to an across-the-board increase in transportation costs, food prices, and utility tariffs.

The levy was reportedly introduced to support road maintenance and fund energy sector shortfalls, but critics argue it’s another backdoor tax disguised as a development initiative.

“They told us they were scrapping nuisance taxes. What they’ve done is replace them with even more painful ones,” the Minority added.

⚖️ Political Fallout and Public Discontent

The reaction has been swift on social media, with hashtags like #FuelLevy and #ELevyProMax trending across Ghanaian platforms. The youth, in particular, have drawn comparisons to the widely unpopular E-Levy, which sparked nationwide protests last year.

Many are questioning whether the current administration is out of touch with the economic reality of the average citizen.
