Unity Cup 2025: Kudus, Partey Absent as Salis and Afena-Gyan Return to Black Stars

Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Football Association has released the squad list for the upcoming Unity Cup 2025, and it comes with notable absentees: Mohammed Kudus and Thomas Partey are missing from the lineup, raising eyebrows ahead of the high-profile regional tournament.

Both players, considered central to Ghana’s midfield setup, are reportedly recovering from minor injuries and have been left out as a precaution. The decision comes as Coach Otto Addo seeks to balance player welfare with team readiness, with a long-term view toward the AFCON 2026 qualifiers.

“We are managing workloads and prioritizing full fitness for key competitions ahead,” Coach Addo told reporters.

Key Returns: Salis & Afena-Gyan

Making a return to the squad is RC Lens midfielder Salis Abdul Samed, who last featured for the Black Stars in 2023. His physical presence and tactical discipline are expected to fill part of the void left by Partey.

Also returning is Felix Afena-Gyan, the dynamic striker who has had a solid season in Serie B. Afena-Gyan was previously left out due to form and disciplinary issues, but sources say he’s back with a renewed commitment.

“I’ve learned and grown. I’m ready to give my all for Ghana,” Afena-Gyan stated on social media.

Unity Cup 2025: Testing New Waters

The Unity Cup, a regional mini-tournament involving Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d'Ivoire, will take place in Accra and Cape Coast next month. It offers the Black Stars a platform to test new combinations and rising stars, including debutant Aziz Issah and goalkeeper Kwame Baah.

Ghana’s squad will feature a healthy mix of youth and experience, with Jordan Ayew, Daniel Amartey, and Joseph Paintsil providing leadership.

Fan Reactions

The omission of Kudus and Partey has sparked mixed reactions. Some fans worry about Ghana’s creative and defensive midfield, while others applaud the inclusion of new talent.

“We need to look beyond Kudus. Let’s build a team, not a one-man show,” wrote @BlackStarsVoice on X.
