Bawumia Warns Ghanaians to Brace for Harsh Taxes Under Mahama Presidency

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has issued a sharp warning to Ghanaians, predicting that a potential return of former President John Dramani Mahama to power would usher in a harsh and burdensome tax regime.

Speaking at a political event in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia claimed that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has shown no signs of offering economic relief, and instead intends to resort to aggressive taxation to fill revenue gaps.

“If Mahama returns to office, Ghanaians should prepare for tax upon tax. They have no clear policy direction except to tax everything that moves,” Bawumia asserted.

???? Taxation vs Relief: The 2024 Debate

The Vice President’s remarks come amidst ongoing public debate about the country’s fiscal health and the burden of levies introduced under the current NPP government, including the E-Levy and the new GH¢1 fuel charge.

Despite these, Bawumia argued that his administration is focused on digitalization, job creation, and structural reforms—while accusing the NDC of relying solely on tax expansion.

“You can’t fix the economy by overburdening the people. We are working on productivity, not punishment,” he added.

????️ Setting the Tone for the 2024 Campaign

Bawumia’s statement forms part of an emerging campaign strategy to contrast economic ideologies between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Political observers believe tax policy could become a defining issue in the election, especially as cost of living, inflation, and youth unemployment continue to dominate national discourse.

“Bawumia is framing the next election as a choice between reform and taxation. But with current tax fatigue already at breaking point, both parties will have to do more than make accusations—they must present real, workable solutions.”
