GHS50 Million Allocated to National Research Fund – Education Minister Reveals

Ghana’s government has allocated GHS50 million to the National Research Fund, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening the country’s research and academic landscape, according to the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Speaking at a higher education policy roundtable in Accra, the Minister emphasized that the Fund will provide critical support to universities, think tanks, and independent researchers across all academic disciplines.

“A strong research culture is the backbone of national development. This fund will empower scholars to produce innovations and policy-relevant studies that can shape Ghana’s future,” Dr. Adutwum said.

???? Catalyzing Innovation and Development

The National Research Fund is expected to:

  • Support cutting-edge academic and scientific research

  • Provide grants for postgraduate and doctoral studies

  • Encourage public-private partnerships in innovation

  • Drive data-backed policymaking for national growth

The GHS50 million allocation is the largest single-year investment in national research since the fund’s inception, marking a milestone in Ghana’s education and knowledge economy agenda.

???? A Boost for Ghana’s Knowledge Economy

Dr. Adutwum noted that Ghana must transition from being a consumer of global ideas to becoming a producer of original research, especially in fields such as climate science, artificial intelligence, public health, and engineering.

“This is about academic sovereignty. Ghanaian researchers must lead the charge in solving our local problems with local knowledge,” he added.
