Members of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) have commenced a nationwide strike, protesting the continued tenure of Samuel Adom Botchway as Registrar of Births and Deaths. This industrial action has left many government offices closed, with stranded clients facing uncertainty over when services will resume.

CLOGSAG had earlier issued a directive instructing its members to withdraw their services starting today. The union maintains that Mr. Botchway, a former District Chief Executive under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, is a politically exposed person and therefore ineligible for a role within the civil service. However, the government has defended his appointment, insisting it followed due process.

Disruptions Across the Country

Reports from various regions indicate that the strike is being observed with varying degrees of compliance. In the Ashanti Region, Joy News’ correspondent noted that while some members had reported to work, they refused to serve clients. Meanwhile, in the Bono East Region, Anass Sabit reported empty offices, leaving the public stranded.

However, in the Northern Region, Matina Bugri observed that some union members defied the strike directive and continued providing services, arguing that the leadership’s motives appeared to be more personal than representative of collective interests.

CLOGSAG’s Concerns and Government’s Response

CLOGSAG has expressed dissatisfaction with Mr. Botchway’s participation in the Births and Deaths Registry's budget hearing at the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs on Monday, February 17, 2025. The union views his involvement as confirmation that he remains in office, contradicting the government's previous assurances that he would be replaced.

While some members have fully adhered to the strike directive, others argue that the leadership’s stance is not in their best interest. They believe the appointment issue is being used as a political tool rather than a legitimate labor concern.

The strike has caused significant disruptions, with no clear resolution in sight. As negotiations continue, the public remains in limbo, awaiting a breakthrough between the government and CLOGSAG leadership.
