Accra, Ghana – June 23, 2025 — The Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured all newly posted teachers across the country that budgetary allocations have been made to settle their long-awaited unpaid salaries. This comes after weeks of rising anxiety and agitation among affected teachers over delayed financial compensation.
In an official statement released on Monday, the GES acknowledged the delay and attributed it to “administrative bottlenecks” tied to payroll validation and verification processes. However, it affirmed that the Ministry of Finance has approved funds to clear all outstanding salary arrears.
???? GES Statement
“We wish to assure all newly recruited teachers that provisions have been made in the current budget to address salary arrears. Payment processing is underway in collaboration with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department,” the statement read.
???????? Affected Teachers Speak Out
Many newly posted teachers, particularly those in rural districts, have not received salaries for up to six months since assuming duty. Some report surviving on personal savings or family support, with others threatening to boycott classrooms if delays persist.
“We’ve been teaching without pay for months. The psychological and financial stress is overwhelming,” said one teacher from the Northern Region.
???? GNAT Welcomes Assurance, But Demands Timeline
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) welcomed the GES announcement but emphasized the need for a clear payment timeline and improved onboarding processes in future postings.
“This has become an annual ritual. If we truly value teachers, then timely remuneration should be non-negotiable,” GNAT spokesperson Kwame Anokye stated.
????️ Looking Ahead
The GES also promised to fast-track biometric registration and documentation of any teachers still pending payroll inclusion. Teachers are encouraged to contact their regional GES offices for updates on their status.
