Ashanti Region Hosts Second “Momentum Walk” with Strong Message Against Illicit Drugs

Kumasi, Ghana – The Ashanti Region has successfully hosted the second edition of the Momentum Walk, a community-led civic initiative aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of illicit drug use among the youth. The event, organized by 18Plus4NDC and led by its founder, Bridget Bonnie, brought together hundreds of participants under the theme “Politico-Traditional Walk.”

Dressed in traditional regalia and political colours, participants walked from the Aboabo Post Office to the NDC Regional Office in Kumasi. The initiative served as a platform to engage the public on issues of national development, youth empowerment, and the growing concerns around substance abuse.

Bridget Bonnie, the convener and youth advocate, underscored the urgency of tackling drug abuse in Ghana, especially among young people.

“The future of Ghana depends on the strength and health of our youth. If we don’t take decisive action now against illicit drug use, we risk losing an entire generation,” she warned during her address.

The walk also drew support from local political figures, traditional leaders, and civil society groups who emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing the drug menace. The Ashanti Region, like many others in Ghana, has seen an alarming increase in the misuse of drugs like tramadol, marijuana, and codeine-based cough syrups.

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister and representative of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), lauded the initiative and reiterated the party’s commitment to youth development and public health.

“Our communities must be educated, empowered, and protected. The fight against drugs is not a one-man mission—it requires leadership, accountability, and grassroots action,” he said.

The Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ghana Police Service have also intensified surveillance and enforcement actions against the sale and smuggling of illicit drugs in the region. Community outreach programs and school-based education campaigns are ongoing, aiming to build long-term resilience among the youth.

Organizers say the Momentum Walk will continue across other regions, with the aim of fostering unity, patriotism, and a drug-free Ghana.
