Education Minister Sets 2027 Deadline to Scrap Double Track System

Accra, Ghana – The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has revealed that the government has set 2027 as the official deadline for phasing out the double track system currently being used in some public Senior High Schools (SHS).

Dr. Adutwum made the announcement during a stakeholder engagement, explaining that the Ministry is working diligently to expand infrastructure and increase staffing to accommodate all students on a single track academic calendar.

“By 2027, we are confident that all public senior high schools will return to a unified track system. This will improve academic consistency and ease the pressure on facilities and staff,” he stated.

The double track system was introduced in 2018 to accommodate the surge in enrollment following the implementation of the Free SHS policy. While it helped prevent overcrowding, the system has faced criticism over academic disruptions and inconsistencies in teaching schedules.

Dr. Adutwum acknowledged these concerns and assured that government is prioritizing investments in school infrastructure, such as new classroom blocks, dormitories, and teaching resources, to enable the full return to the single track model.

✅ Conclusion:
The announcement offers hope to parents, educators, and students who have long advocated for the scrapping of the double track system. With 2027 set as the target, attention will now turn to the execution of infrastructure projects and policy adjustments needed to meet the timeline.
