Ken Agyapong Stands as Surety for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi in $2M Sky Train Trial

Accra, Ghana –
Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has stepped forward as a surety for Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi in the ongoing trial concerning the failed $2 million Accra Sky Train project.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, who served as the Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), faces four criminal charges, including willfully causing financial loss to the state and the intentional misapplication of public funds. These charges stem from a controversial $2 million payment made toward the Sky Train project, which was never realized

Following his not guilty plea, the court granted the 80-year-old a GH¢10 million bail, requiring two justified sureties. Mr. Agyapong, a prominent businessman and political figure, fulfilled part of the court’s bail requirements by vouching for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi.

Concerns over Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s health and age have featured prominently in the proceedings. As part of his bail terms, he is required to surrender his passport and report to the police weekly.

The case is being heard at the High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Comfort Tasiame. A case management conference has been scheduled for June 10, 2025, where the court will outline pre-trial timelines and procedural directions for the case.

Mr. Agyapong’s involvement as a surety adds a political dimension to the high-profile trial, which continues to draw public interest and scrutiny over accountability in major infrastructure projects in Ghana.
