Asante Kotoko SC is set to retain one of its key players, goalkeeper Frederick Asare, following a mutual agreement in principle to extend his contract ahead of the 2025/2026 Ghana Premier League season.

The promising shot-stopper, who joined the Porcupine Warriors in 2022 from WAFA, has emerged as a consistent performer and fan favorite, thanks to his commanding presence between the posts and impressive reflexes. His current deal was due to expire at the end of the season, but both parties have now reached a verbal understanding that will see Asare remain at the club beyond 2025.

Commitment to Stability

According to sources close to the club, final paperwork is being prepared, and an official announcement is expected in the coming days.

“We’re happy with Asare’s development and professionalism. He has shown great maturity and consistency. The agreement in principle is a step toward building a more stable and competitive team for next season,” a club official told Top Knowledge Media.

Asare, 25, has kept 10 clean sheets in 25 league appearances this season and has been pivotal in some of Kotoko’s most crucial results, despite a generally inconsistent campaign for the club.

Asare’s Reaction

Speaking briefly after the news emerged, Asare expressed gratitude to the club and fans for their support.

“Kotoko is a big family, and I’m proud to wear this jersey. Talks have gone well, and I look forward to continuing this journey with the team. Together, we’ll aim for greater success,” he said.

Fans Applaud the Move

Supporters of the Kumasi-based club have taken to social media to applaud the decision, with many praising the board for prioritizing squad continuity ahead of the new season.

“Extending Asare’s contract is one of the best decisions Kotoko has made this year. We need a strong backbone and he’s proven himself to be just that,” tweeted a popular Kotoko fan page.

Looking Ahead

With this agreement, Kotoko signals its intent to build on a core of reliable performers while addressing areas of weakness in preparation for a more ambitious campaign next season. The potential appointment of a new head coach—rumored to be Karim Zito—adds another layer of intrigue as the club positions itself for a comprehensive rebuild.

As Kotoko eyes a return to continental football, keeping top talents like Frederick Asare is seen as a vital step toward regaining dominance in the Ghana Premier League.
