Veteran politician and statesman, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has commended former President John Dramani Mahama for outlining a clear 120-day social contract as part of his campaign strategy. However, he has urged Mahama to make illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, a central focus of his policy agenda.

Speaking in an interview with local media, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe described the 120-day plan—which outlines specific actions Mahama pledges to implement within the first four months of assuming office—as a refreshing and bold commitment to accountable leadership. He praised the initiative for offering a measurable benchmark by which citizens can evaluate their leaders.

“It’s encouraging to see a leader commit to a clear, time-bound contract with the people. That’s the kind of accountability we need,” he said.

Nonetheless, the statesman emphasized that no plan for national recovery can be complete without a serious and uncompromising approach to galamsey, which has devastated vast portions of Ghana’s lands, polluted rivers, and undermined rural livelihoods.

“The threat galamsey poses to our national survival is enormous. No administration can claim success if it doesn’t confront this issue head-on,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stressed.

He called for bipartisan political will, a strengthened legal framework, and genuine community engagement to halt the menace of illegal mining. He added that Mahama’s next administration, if successful at the polls, must lead with both action and resolve, particularly in environmental protection and resource management.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has often offered critical and independent viewpoints on national issues. His latest remarks, though supportive of Mahama’s initiative, reflect a growing national consensus that galamsey remains one of Ghana’s most urgent challenges.

Mahama’s 120-day contract includes reforms in health, education, governance, and infrastructure—seen by many as a strategic move to regain public trust ahead of the 2024 general elections.
