Ministry of Health Puts in Measures to Mitigate Effect of GRNMA Strike

As the strike action by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) enters a critical phase, the Ministry of Health has announced a series of contingency measures aimed at reducing the impact on public health services.

The strike, which began over unresolved conditions of service and compensation issues, has led to significant disruptions in hospitals and health centers across the country. The Ministry has acknowledged the gravity of the situation and is working swiftly to ensure that essential services remain available to the public.

Emergency Response Measures

In a press release issued on Thursday, the Ministry outlined the following steps:

  • Deployment of backup staff including retired nurses, health assistants, and military medical personnel to high-traffic hospitals.

  • Reassignment of administrative health workers to assist in basic caregiving duties at affected facilities.

  • Engagement with regional health directors to monitor and manage local disruptions in care delivery.

  • Ongoing dialogue with GRNMA leadership in a bid to reach a peaceful resolution.

“We are deeply concerned about the impact this strike is having on Ghanaians who need care, especially in maternity and emergency units,” the statement read. “While we respect the right to protest, we urge all parties to prioritize patient lives and return to the negotiation table.”

Public Advisory

The Ministry is urging the public to remain calm and only visit hospitals for critical and emergency cases. Alternative healthcare points, including private facilities and community health centers, have been alerted to prepare for increased patient load.

GRNMA’s Position

The GRNMA insists that the strike is a last resort after failed negotiations with the government. The union is demanding improvements to salary structures, risk allowances, and working conditions that it argues have been delayed or ignored for too long.

“Our members are overworked and undervalued,” said GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo. “We need action, not promises.”

What’s Next?

While the Ministry has activated its emergency strategy, the situation remains tense. Talks between government representatives and GRNMA officials are expected to resume within the next few days. Both sides have expressed a desire to resolve the matter peacefully—but time is of the essence as patients across the country await relief.
