Gov’t Calls for Public Interrogation of MP Over Drug Trafficking Claims – Speaker Yet to Approve NIB Request
The government has requested a public interrogation of a sitting Member of Parliament in connection with alleged drug trafficking activities, but Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has yet to grant approval for the National Intelligence Bureau’s (NIB) request.

Accra, Ghana – The Government of Ghana has formally called for a public interrogation of a sitting Member of Parliament suspected to be linked to drug trafficking activities, sources at the Ministry of Interior have confirmed.
The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) submitted a request for clearance to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, seeking permission to question the MP in public as part of a broader investigation into transnational narcotics networks.
However, the Speaker has yet to respond or grant authorization — a legal requirement under Ghana’s parliamentary privileges before any law enforcement body can take action involving a sitting legislator.
The identity of the MP in question remains undisclosed due to the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation, but the issue has already sparked national conversation about accountability, transparency, and the sanctity of parliamentary privilege.
Civil society organizations and anti-corruption watchdogs have urged the Speaker and Parliament to act swiftly in support of the investigation, stressing the importance of rooting out crime irrespective of status or office.
A senior official at the NIB said, “This is a matter of national and international interest. We cannot afford to politicize it. We expect full cooperation from Parliament.”
✅ Conclusion:
As the nation awaits the Speaker’s decision, public interest remains high. The case presents a critical test of Ghana’s commitment to justice and institutional independence in fighting drug trafficking.
