Accra, Ghana –
Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has cautioned the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to uphold fairness and equity in governance, following the controversial arrest of NPP stalwart Chairman Wontumi.

Addressing Parliament during a heated session, Afenyo-Markin stated that the treatment of political figures must be guided by the golden rule: "Treat others the way you expect to be treated." His comment follows widespread reactions to the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, over allegations yet to be fully disclosed to the public.

“What we are seeing today could become a precedent tomorrow. You cannot call for due process when in opposition and abandon it when in power. If we begin to weaponize the justice system, it won’t end well for anyone,” Afenyo-Markin warned.

Political Temperature Rises

The arrest has caused political tension, with some members of the NPP accusing the government of selective justice and politically motivated prosecution. NPP MPs staged a walkout during Wednesday’s proceedings in protest, drawing national attention.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that such actions can threaten democratic norms and inflame division. He reminded both sides of the House that political rivalry must not override constitutional values.

NDC Responds

In response, NDC MPs have maintained that no one is above the law and that Wontumi’s arrest followed legal protocols. They insist the move was purely judicial and not politically engineered.

But Afenyo-Markin isn’t convinced, stating that even the perception of bias undermines public confidence.

“We’re not asking for immunity. We’re asking for consistency. If you detain our members today, be prepared to uphold the same standard when the tables turn,” he added.

Conclusion:
As calls for justice and political fairness mount, the controversy surrounding Chairman Wontumi’s arrest highlights a growing demand for principled leadership in Ghana’s governance. Afenyo-Markin’s remarks serve as a timely reminder that democracy thrives not on power, but on restraint and respect for process.
