Wontumi-EOCO Saga: NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chair Was a Victim of Internal Party Politics – Kojoga Adawudu

Legal Practitioner Kojoga Adawudu Alleges Wontumi Was Targeted by His Own Party

Ghanaian lawyer and political analyst Kojoga Adawudu has stirred conversation with a bold assertion that Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was not merely caught up in legal trouble—but rather a victim of internal New Patriotic Party (NPP) politics.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP was recently invited by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over issues believed to relate to financial dealings involving his private business interests. The development triggered both political tension and speculation, especially in the party’s stronghold.

“Wontumi Was a Political Target” — Kojoga Speaks Out

In a media engagement, Adawudu suggested that the EOCO investigation was not purely administrative or criminal in nature.

“What happened to Chairman Wontumi is the kind of political backstabbing we often see when internal elections are drawing near,” Adawudu said.
“He was thrown under the bus by people within his own party who want him out of the way ahead of key contests.”

Though Adawudu did not name specific individuals, the statement adds weight to growing concerns that factionalism within the NPP is intensifying as the party prepares for the 2024 elections and other internal primaries.

Tension Mounts in Ashanti Region

The Ashanti Region remains a political fortress for the NPP, and Chairman Wontumi has long held significant sway in the region. His recent troubles have led to fierce online debates, with some party faithful defending him, while others argue that no one should be above the law.

Political observers say this could indicate deeper rifts within the party, especially between power brokers jostling for post-Akufo-Addo influence.

What This Means for NPP

If Adawudu’s claims hold weight, then EOCO’s probe may be more than just a legal issue—it could be a reflection of the ongoing battle for control within the ruling party.

As the NPP walks a tightrope between justice, loyalty, and internal democracy, this case may set the tone for how the party handles dissent and discipline in the critical months ahead.

“This isn’t just about Wontumi or EOCO. This is about how power struggles within political parties can spill into state institutions. Ghana’s democracy must guard against political weaponization of justice—or we all lose.”
