16-Year-Old OKESS Student Arrested with Locally Manufactured Gun During Dormitory Search
During a routine dormitory inspection at Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School in Kumasi, a 16-year-old student was found in possession of a locally manufactured firearm. The student and his stepfather, who claimed ownership of the weapon, have been arrested and granted police enquiry bail pending further investigations.

A 16-year-old second-year student at Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) in Kumasi has been arrested for unlawful possession of a locally manufactured firearm. The incident occurred during a routine dormitory search conducted by school authorities on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Upon discovering the weapon in the student's belongings, school officials promptly handed him over to the Tafo-Pankrono Divisional Police Command for further investigation.
During police interrogation, the student claimed that the firearm belonged to his stepfather, Mr. Daniel Owusu Baafi. Acting on this information, the police arrested Mr. Baafi on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
Both the student and his stepfather have been granted police enquiry bail and are scheduled to report to the police on Monday, May 19, 2025, to assist with ongoing investigations.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs for the Ashanti Regional Police Command, confirmed the details in a statement issued on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
The incident has raised concerns about student safety and the end for stringent security measures within educational institutions. Authorities are urging parents and guardians to ensure that minors do not have access to weapons and to educate them on the legal implications of possessing firearms without authorization.
