Accra, Ghana —
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a 46-year-old Ghanaian woman at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to traffic narcotics concealed in cargo.
The arrest took place at the Swissport cargo section of the airport on May 27, 2025, during a routine inspection by NACOC officers. Authorities discovered 30 slabs of compressed cannabis, weighing approximately 16.4 kilograms, cleverly hidden among the woman’s declared personal effects.
According to NACOC, the suspect was preparing the shipment for international delivery, falsely labeling the contents to evade detection. However, intelligence gathered led to a detailed inspection of the cargo, resulting in the discovery and seizure of the narcotic substance.
The woman is currently in custody and is said to be assisting with ongoing investigations. The narcotics have been secured for further testing and will serve as evidence in court proceedings.
In a statement, NACOC reiterated its commitment to fighting drug trafficking at all ports of entry and called on the public to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities.
“Drug trafficking poses a serious threat to national and international security. NACOC will not relent in its efforts to rid Ghana of such crimes,” the statement read.
The case has sparked fresh conversations about Ghana’s role as a potential transit hub for narcotics and the need for tighter cargo screening protocols.
