UDS GAUA Declares Indefinite Strike Over Withdrawal of Office-Holding Allowances
On May 27, 2025, the University for Development Studies (UDS) branch of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA-UDS) commenced an indefinite strike. This action follows the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission's (GTEC) directive to suspend office-holding allowances for GAUA-UDS members, a move criticized for its lack of consultation and adverse impact on staff welfare.

Tamale, Ghana – The Ghana Association of University Administrators at the University for Development Studies (GAUA-UDS) has declared an indefinite strike effective May 27, 2025. This decision arises from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission's (GTEC) directive, issued on April 28, 2025, instructing the cessation of office-holding allowances for GAUA-UDS members in management and leadership
GAUA-UDS President, Dr. Stephany Adongo, expressed disappointment over GTEC's unilateral decision, highlighting that it contradicts a prior approval granted by GTEC in a letter dated September 18, 2023. The withdrawal of these allowances has significantly affected 108 members, with some struggling to meet basic living expenses until the next salary cycle.
In response, GAUA-UDS convened an emergency meeting on May 26, 2025, resolving to withdraw all services and responsibilities until their demands are met. These include the immediate reversal of GTEC's directive, payment of all withheld allowances, and the establishment of a ministerial committee to develop a comprehensive framework for office-holding roles and related welfare matters.
The strike has disrupted administrative functions at UDS, affecting ongoing examinations and other critical operations. GAUA-UDS emphasizes that the strike is a measure of last resort, taken after all efforts at dialogue failed. The association urges the government to engage in constructive discussions to resolve the matter in good faith.
