Police Arrest Suspect in UEW Lecturer’s Gruesome Murder; Deceased’s Belongings Found on Him

Winneba, Ghana – The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the disturbing murder of a University of Education, Winneba (UEW) lecturer, whose decomposing body was discovered buried in a shallow grave at his private residence in Winneba earlier this week.

The arrest came after intensified investigations and intelligence-led operations. Police say the suspect was found in possession of the deceased’s personal belongings, including a mobile phone, laptop, and bank cards. These discoveries have strengthened the case against him, with police calling it a “critical breakthrough.”

“This arrest marks a significant step forward in solving the murder of the respected lecturer. We are piecing together the events that led to this heinous act,” said a police spokesperson in a press briefing Thursday afternoon.

Background

The lecturer, whose identity is being withheld until formal family notification is completed, had been missing for several days before neighbors reported a strange odor emanating from his residence. Police investigations led to the gruesome discovery of his body buried beneath a cemented floor section in the house.

The incident shocked both the university community and the nation, prompting an outpouring of grief and calls for swift justice.

Motive Still Unclear

Although the suspect is now in custody, police say the motive behind the murder remains unclear. Investigators are not ruling out robbery or a personal dispute but are awaiting the results of further interrogations and forensic analysis.

The body of the deceased has been transferred to the Police Hospital morgue in Accra for a full autopsy. The suspect is expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.

UEW Community Reacts

The university community remains in mourning, with staff and students demanding justice for their slain colleague. A candlelight vigil is being planned by student leaders in his honor.

“We’re relieved that someone has been arrested, but our hearts are still heavy. We want full justice,” said a student leader at UEW.

Public Response

Social media has been flooded with reactions, as the arrest brings both a sense of relief and renewed outrage. The trending hashtag #JusticeForUEWLecturer continues to rally Ghanaians demanding accountability and greater campus safety.
