Arthur Kennedy Backs Kufuor’s Call: Akufo-Addo Must Apologise to Ghanaians

Accra, Ghana – Prominent political commentator and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Arthur Kennedy, has thrown his weight behind former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s call for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to apologise to the Ghanaian people for the state of the nation under his administration.

Dr. Kennedy, speaking in a recent media engagement, expressed strong agreement with the elder statesman's sentiment, noting that the Akufo-Addo government owes the people of Ghana an apology for its governance failures, particularly in the areas of economic mismanagement, rising corruption, and weakened institutional accountability.

“I fully support President Kufuor’s call. This government must admit where it has gone wrong. A sincere apology to Ghanaians would not only reflect humility but could also be the first step towards restoring public trust,” Dr. Kennedy said.

Former President Kufuor, in earlier comments, subtly criticized the current administration’s performance, urging it to show leadership by acknowledging the pain and hardship many citizens are facing. Although his remarks were measured, they were widely interpreted as a rebuke of how the Akufo-Addo government has handled critical national issues.

Dr. Kennedy went further, arguing that the culture of silence and defensiveness within the ruling party has made matters worse.

“It is not weakness to apologise. What is weak is the refusal to listen to the people. Ghanaians are angry—not just because of inflation or joblessness—but because they feel unheard, disrespected, and betrayed,” he added.

The call for an apology has added to growing public pressure on the President and his cabinet to take responsibility for economic hardships, poor public sector reforms, and alleged cronyism.

The NPP, once widely praised for its promise of good governance and economic transformation, now faces increasing criticism even from within its own ranks. Dr. Kennedy’s public statements reflect a widening rift between party loyalists and concerned reformers calling for introspection as the country heads into another election cycle.

While there has yet to be an official response from the Presidency, political analysts believe such pressure—especially from respected voices within the party—could push the government to adopt a more conciliatory tone in the months ahead.
