Bryan Acheampong Tipped for NPP Flagbearer Race in 2028 – Appiah-Kubi Hints at Rising Star
Member of Parliament Andy Appiah-Kubi has suggested that Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, may be a potential flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2028. This early endorsement has sparked discussions about the future leadership of the ruling party after the 2024 general elections.

Accra, Ghana – The political spotlight is already shifting beyond 2024, as Bryan Acheampong, the current Minister for Food and Agriculture, is being subtly positioned as a future flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a recent media interview, MP Andy Appiah-Kubi hinted that Acheampong’s growing political profile, leadership qualities, and recent national assignments have made him a viable candidate for the 2028 presidential race.
“I believe Bryan Acheampong is one of the people the party should keep an eye on. If he keeps this up, he might just be a flagbearer contender come 2028,” Appiah-Kubi said.
The Bryan Acheampong Factor
A former Minister of State in National Security and a Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong has steadily built influence within both government and party ranks. His current portfolio at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has placed him at the heart of the NPP’s economic messaging, particularly around food security and agribusiness.
Analysts say Acheampong’s technocratic style, coupled with military background and strategic political alliances, positions him as a dark horse to watch in the coming years.
Early Endorsement or Strategic Messaging?
Appiah-Kubi’s comments are seen by some as a deliberate attempt to test the waters and gauge internal party reactions.
“This isn’t just random praise. It’s part of a broader political signaling game,” said Dr. Esi Ofori-Atta, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana. “Names floated this early are often being groomed quietly in the background.”
Other party insiders, however, caution against turning attention away from the 2024 contest, which pits current Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia against the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama in what’s expected to be a fiercely contested race.
NPP’s Post-2024 Landscape
With President Nana Akufo-Addo constitutionally barred from seeking re-election, and Dr. Bawumia running in 2024, the 2028 flagbearer slot is seen as wide open, particularly if the NPP does not retain power.
Acheampong’s potential bid would likely face competition from other younger-generation party leaders and ministers with presidential ambitions.
