‘When I Cough, You and the NDC Catch a Cold’ – Attorney General Godfred Dame Fires Back at Thaddeus Sory

Accra, Ghana – Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has issued a scathing response to recent public criticisms from lawyer Thaddeus Sory, asserting that his legal interventions continue to unsettle the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“When I cough, you and the NDC catch a cold,” Dame said during a press briefing in Accra, sending a direct jab at Sory following the latter's remarks over perceived political interference in ongoing legal matters.

The bold statement came after Sory criticized the Attorney General’s handling of high-profile political and judicial cases, accusing Dame of weaponizing the justice system and conducting selective prosecutions that disproportionately target opposition figures.

Legal Fire Meets Political Heat

Dame, known for his sharp courtroom presence and unapologetic political stance, brushed off Sory’s claims as “calculated attempts to distract from the NDC’s legal and ethical failures.”

“My only duty is to the Republic and the Constitution. If the NDC feels targeted, perhaps they should examine their actions,” Dame added.

This exchange is the latest in a series of tensions between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition, as high-stakes legal battles over corruption, electoral malfeasance, and institutional integrity dominate national discourse.

Reactions From Across the Aisle

The NDC has condemned Dame’s comments as “reckless, unprofessional, and unbecoming of a public officeholder.” Party spokesperson Sammy Gyamfi noted that such language reflects a deep politicization of the judiciary.

Conversely, NPP supporters and government insiders have defended Dame’s remarks, describing them as a bold stand against unwarranted attacks and a reminder of the AG’s effectiveness.

Legal Experts Weigh In

Prominent legal analysts warn that while robust debate is healthy, the tone of recent exchanges may erode public trust in Ghana’s legal system.

“This sort of political banter may serve party bases but undermines the solemnity of the rule of law,” said Prof. Kwaku Asare, a constitutional law expert.

The Bigger Picture

With Ghana’s 2024 general elections looming and several sensitive cases pending, the friction between legal authority and political narrative is expected to intensify. Observers warn that personalities like Dame and Sory, while influential, must prioritize institutional integrity over political spectacle.
