CEPD commends Mahama on the consideration of a 5% employment quota for persons with disabilities

The commendation follows Mahama’s declaration that his government would ensure greater inclusion of PWDs in the workforce by mandating that at least 5% of public sector jobs be allocated to individuals with disabilities. The pledge, made during a recent stakeholder engagement, has been met with widespread appreciation from advocacy groups championing equal employment opportunities.

A Step Towards Inclusion

The CEPD has emphasized the importance of such policies in bridging the employment gap for PWDs, who often face systemic barriers to securing meaningful work.

"This is a progressive step in fostering inclusivity and ensuring that PWDs have equal opportunities in the workforce," said a spokesperson for CEPD. "We commend Mahama’s vision and urge all policymakers to prioritize the rights of persons with disabilities in national development plans."

Challenges in Disability Employment

Despite existing legal frameworks, PWDs in Ghana continue to experience high levels of unemployment and workplace discrimination. According to advocacy reports, inadequate infrastructure, employer biases, and limited policy enforcement contribute to the difficulties faced by disabled individuals seeking employment.

CEPD believes that enforcing a dedicated employment quota will significantly enhance job accessibility, economic empowerment, and social inclusion for PWDs.

Call for Bipartisan Support

While Mahama’s pledge has been warmly received, CEPD has called on all political parties to adopt similar measures in their policy agendas.

"We encourage a bipartisan approach to disability employment. This is not a political issue but a national priority that requires collective commitment," the organization noted.

Looking Ahead

The implementation of a 5% employment quota for PWDs would mark a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to create a more inclusive workforce. CEPD has vowed to continue working with government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and civil society organizations to advocate for policies that promote equal opportunities for all.
