Police Assure Robust Security Measures for 2025 Homowo Festival

The Ghana Police Service has announced a comprehensive security operation ahead of the 2025 Homowo Festival, assuring the public of its commitment to maintaining peace, order, and safety during one of the Ga people’s most sacred cultural celebrations.

The Accra Regional Police Command, in a public briefing, stated that adequate personnel have been deployed to strategic locations across the Ga State to monitor activities, prevent disruptions, and swiftly respond to any incidents that may occur throughout the festive period.

One of the key highlights of the police announcement is a strict ban on the use of live ammunition during the celebration, particularly during traditional musketry displays. Only authorized traditional blank firing is permitted. The police warned that any individual found using live ammunition will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

“We want to ensure that this year’s Homowo Festival is celebrated peacefully and in accordance with the customs and laws of the land,” a police spokesperson emphasized.

The security agency is also working in close collaboration with traditional authorities, municipal assemblies, and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to enforce the customary ban on drumming and noise-making, which was in effect from May 12 to June 12, 2025. This cultural practice is considered a sacred part of the Homowo ritual, preparing the community spiritually for the main event.

In addition, the public has been urged to cooperate with security officers and report suspicious behavior via emergency lines 112 or 18555. These measures, the police say, are to foster a safe environment where cultural expression and public safety go hand in hand.

The Homowo Festival, celebrated primarily by the Ga people in the Greater Accra Region, is a harvest festival marked by symbolic "hooting at hunger," traditional processions, sprinkling of kpokpoi, and community gatherings. It attracts not only local celebrants but also visitors and dignitaries from across Ghana and the diaspora.

As the celebration draws near, the Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its readiness to uphold law and order and called on all celebrants to observe festival regulations and show mutual respect.
