Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem has reaffirmed the Ghanaian government's commitment to the health sector, announcing the prompt release of funds to bolster healthcare services nationwide. This assurance was made during a meeting with Dr. Sania Nishtar, CEO of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), at the Ministry of Finance.
A significant policy shift includes the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), resulting in the release of GH¢30 billion to support the sector. This move aims to enhance the financial sustainability of the NHIS and ensure timely disbursement of funds to healthcare providers.
Additionally, the government has earmarked over GH¢2 billion for healthcare infrastructure development between now and 2028, with GH¢200 million allocated for 2025. These funds will support critical projects, including the construction of a new medical training facility at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
As Ghana prepares to transition from GAVI support by 2030, Mr. Ampem emphasized the government's dedication to positioning the country as a pharmaceutical hub within the sub-region, aiming to create employment opportunities and add value to local resources.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, present at the meeting, commended GAVI's role in strengthening Ghana's vaccination program, noting the country's leadership in immunization coverage within the sub-region.
