Government receives first consignment of Human Papillomavirus vaccine

Accra, Ghana – June 2025 – The Ghanaian government has received its first consignment of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, marking a pivotal step toward a nationwide immunization campaign targeting adolescent girls aged 9 to 14. The vaccine is set to be integrated into Ghana’s routine immunization schedule by late 2025 or early 2026

???? Vaccine and Rollout Strategy

This strategic move builds on earlier pilot programs conducted in 13 districts between 2013 and 2017, which yielded coverage rates above 80% . The Ghana Health Service’s Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Manager, Dr. Kwame Amponsah‑Achiano, confirmed that the rollout will focus on both in-school and out-of-school girls, primarily those in grades 4 and 5

Efforts are being aligned with WHO guidelines calling for two-dose schedules, with ongoing discussions around introducing a possible single-dose option, following the WHO prequalification of Cecolin®

???? Why This Matters

  • Disease Prevention: HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, which affects nearly 3,000 women annually in Ghana, with approximately 2,000 related deaths .

  • Public Health Impact: Widespread HPV vaccination can reduce cervical cancer incidence by up to 90%, based on global outcomes .

  • Economic Equity: Prior surveys highlight that vaccine cost has been a major barrier—private doses have surged to GHS 1,000–1,200 each, making full vaccination out-of-reach for many  The new government rollout aims to ensure equitable access.

???? Next Steps

  1. Nationwide launch: Expected before year-end, starting in key regions and scaling across Ghana

  2. Delivery method: School-based campaigns will be complemented by community outreaches to vaccinate the out-of-school cohort .

  3. Support Framework: Complementing vaccination efforts, Ghana will strengthen cervical cancer screening, public awareness, and stakeholder engagement—especially with parents, educators, and community leaders

✔️ In Summary

The arrival of Ghana’s first HPV vaccine consignment is a monumental milestone in the fight against cervical cancer. Backed by strong pilot results and bolstered by global best practices, the nation now stands poised to protect thousands of young girls and save lives.

???? Meta Description:

Ghana has received its first shipment of the HPV vaccine, launching a nationwide immunization effort aimed at protecting adolescent girls aged 9–14 from cervical cancer by late 2025.
