Minority petitions Speaker over ‘attempted arrest’ of MP Ntim Fordjour

Accra, Ghana – The Minority Caucus in Parliament has filed a formal petition to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, expressing concern over what they describe as an "attempted arrest" of Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South and Deputy Minister of Education.

According to the Minority, the incident — which allegedly involved plainclothes officers attempting to detain the MP — occurred without prior notification to the Speaker, in violation of parliamentary protocols.

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in a statement accompanying the petition, stressed that the move poses a threat to the dignity and independence of Parliament. “The attempted arrest of any sitting MP, especially without informing the Speaker, is unacceptable and a breach of parliamentary privilege,” he said.

He called on the Speaker to take immediate action and summon relevant authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, while parliamentary sources say the Speaker is reviewing the petition.

✅ Conclusion:
This latest development adds to growing concerns about executive-legislative relations in Ghana. The Minority’s petition seeks not only answers but also a reinforcement of the respect and legal protections accorded to Members of Parliament under Ghana’s constitution.
