Greater Accra Regional Minister leads team to demolish ongoing structures at Tema ramsar site

The Tema Ramsar site, designated for the conservation of wetland ecosystems and biodiversity, has faced ongoing challenges due to illegal developments. The recent demolition targeted structures in various stages of completion, underscoring the government's commitment to preserving these critical habitats.

This action aligns with previous efforts to protect Ramsar sites in the region. In November 2022, then-Regional Minister Henry Quartey suspended demolitions at the Sakumo Ramsar site to engage stakeholders in dialogue. Similarly, in June 2024, Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover led a task force to dismantle structures encroaching on the Sakumono Ramsar site. 

Despite these measures, encroachment remains a pressing concern. The current demolition at the Tema Ramsar site reflects a renewed commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and deterring unauthorized developments.

The operation received support from various stakeholders, including environmental agencies and local authorities, emphasizing a collective effort to safeguard the region's wetlands. Minister Ocloo's leadership in this endeavor reinforces the government's dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable land use practices.

As urbanization pressures continue to mount, the protection of Ramsar sites like those in Tema becomes increasingly vital. These wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting biodiversity, and providing essential ecosystem services.
