In a significant step towards strengthening Ghana's healthcare system, the Ministry of Health has announced that it will commence the recruitment of medical officers and dentists starting Thursday, May 16, 2025. This nationwide exercise is expected to address staffing gaps in government health facilities and improve healthcare delivery, especially in underserved areas.
The Ministry made this announcement via an official public statement on May 14, 2025, calling on qualified practitioners to prepare for the application process through the official recruitment portal.
Targeted Professionals and Eligibility
The recruitment exercise is targeted at medical doctors and dental surgeons who have completed their housemanship, obtained full registration from the Medical and Dental Council (MDC), and are currently seeking posting within the public health sector.
Prospective applicants are advised to log on to the Ministry’s online recruitment platform at hr.moh.gov.gh to complete and submit their applications starting from May 16. The portal will be open for a specific period, after which shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further instructions.
Bridging the Gap in Healthcare Delivery
The move by the Health Ministry forms part of the government’s broader efforts to reduce the doctor-to-patient ratio, enhance access to primary and specialized healthcare, and fulfill the staffing requirements of the Ghana Health Service, teaching hospitals, and other government health institutions.
Ghana’s public health sector continues to face challenges with staffing shortages, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas. Health experts have commended the recruitment initiative, urging the government to ensure timely posting and adequate resourcing of the new recruits.
Ministry Assures Transparency
In its statement, the Ministry of Health assured the public of a transparent and merit-based recruitment process. It also warned against dealing with unauthorized persons or making any form of payment in relation to the recruitment process.
“Applicants are to note that the Ministry of Health does not charge any fees for recruitment and postings. Any such demands must be reported immediately,” the statement read.
Stakeholder Reactions
Health advocacy groups and associations, including the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), have welcomed the news, describing it as timely and essential. The GMA further encouraged the government to ensure that newly recruited personnel are posted to regions where the need is greatest and provided with the necessary tools and accommodation to work efficiently.
Meanwhile, unemployed doctors and dentists have expressed relief at the announcement, hoping for a swift and fair process that will allow them to put their training into practice.
