In a decisive move to reinforce national security and support Ghana’s 24-hour economy initiative, the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has officially handed over 60 pickup vehicles and 20 motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service. The presentation ceremony was held in Accra on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
The vehicles, all locally assembled by Zonda Tec Ghana Limited, are intended to enhance the mobility and responsiveness of the police force, particularly during nighttime operations and in areas where businesses operate beyond conventional hours.
A Security Framework for a 24-Hour Economy
Speaking at the event, Hon. Muntaka emphasized the government’s commitment to building a secure environment that fosters uninterrupted economic activity.
“As Ghana transitions into a fully functional 24-hour economy, it is crucial that our security agencies are equipped and ready to meet the evolving demands of this new era. This donation marks the beginning of a broader strategy to ensure that every business and citizen operating at any hour can do so in safety,” the Minister said.
He also announced the creation of a special police unit tasked with providing 24-hour surveillance and protection, specifically geared toward safeguarding economic zones, business districts, markets, and transport corridors operating late into the night.
Partnership with Local Industry
The Minister commended Zonda Tec Ghana for its role in promoting local content and industrial growth. The company’s state-of-the-art assembly plant has been pivotal in producing high-quality vehicles tailored to Ghana’s terrain and operational needs.
“We are proud that this partnership not only empowers our police but also boosts local manufacturing. This is a win-win for both national security and industrial development,” said Alhaji Muntaka.
Madam Yang Yang, CEO of Zonda Tec, expressed gratitude to the government for its confidence in their brand and reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting national development through durable, locally assembled vehicles.
Digital Transformation and Security
In addition to the vehicle donation, the Interior Minister revealed ongoing efforts to digitalize work permit and employment quota processes. According to him, this is part of a wider government initiative to streamline administrative procedures, reduce bureaucracy, and encourage more foreign direct investment.
“The modernization of our regulatory systems will ensure faster, more transparent, and accountable governance. A digital Ghana is a safer, more efficient Ghana,” he noted.
Reactions and Implications
Security analysts have praised the donation as a timely intervention, especially as businesses and industries prepare to expand into late-night operations under the 24-hour economy policy. However, some have called for continuous training and resource support for police personnel to ensure effective use of these assets.
The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, received the keys to the new fleet and pledged the Service’s full commitment to using the resources judiciously.
“This gesture from the Ministry and government at large is a clear indication of support for law enforcement. We assure the nation that we will put these vehicles to productive use,” the IGP said.
Conclusion
The presentation of these vehicles symbolizes more than a mere donation—it is a strategic investment in Ghana’s economic future. As the nation charts a path toward a 24-hour economic model, securing its people and businesses remains paramount. The partnership between government, industry, and law enforcement could set the tone for a more resilient and productive national economy.
