Kumasi, Ghana – The Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, has made a passionate appeal to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah, for increased governmental and regional support in addressing critical challenges facing the second-largest referral hospital in Ghana.
During a strategic meeting held at the Regional Coordinating Council in Kumasi, Prof. Addai-Mensah highlighted a number of infrastructural, logistical, and operational issues that continue to affect the hospital’s ability to provide world-class healthcare services.
???? Key Challenges Highlighted
-
Aging infrastructure – Parts of the hospital, particularly wards and specialized units, are in dire need of renovation.
-
Equipment deficits – Shortage of essential medical equipment, including diagnostic machines, ICU beds, and laboratory tools.
-
Funding constraints – Delays in reimbursements from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and limited internally generated funds.
-
Human resource shortages – Staffing gaps in critical departments such as surgery, emergency medicine, and anaesthesia.
Prof. Addai-Mensah emphasized that without swift intervention, the hospital’s reputation and ability to deliver timely, quality care would continue to decline.
“KATH serves as a vital lifeline for the northern and middle belts of Ghana. We cannot allow its challenges to persist any longer,” he stressed.
???? Ashanti Regional Minister Responds
Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah assured the hospital management of his full support and pledged to lobby central government, donor partners, and corporate Ghana to secure funding and resources for KATH.
“Komfo Anokye is more than a regional facility – it is a national asset. We must all contribute to keeping it functional and dignified,” he said.
He also called for more public-private partnerships (PPPs) and community involvement in supporting healthcare delivery in the Ashanti Region.
???? A Call for Collective Action
Health advocates and local residents have long raised concerns over conditions at KATH, which services thousands of patients each week. Many believe the time for policy implementation and not just talk is now.
The hospital, named after the legendary Ashanti priest Komfo Anokye, continues to be a cornerstone of healthcare in Ghana — but one in desperate need of revitalization.
