Koo Ofori granted GHC 320,000 bail in $50,000 fraud case

Popular Ghanaian actor Koo Ofori, known for his roles in local television dramas and comedies, has been granted bail of GHC 320,000 by an Accra Circuit Court in connection with an alleged $50,000 fraud case.

The court, presided over by His Honour Samuel Bright Acquah, granted bail on Monday with two sureties, one of whom must be a public servant earning not less than GHC 3,000 monthly. The accused, whose real name is Samuel Kwame Ofori, pleaded not guilty to charges of defrauding by false pretence.

According to the prosecution, Koo Ofori allegedly received a total of $50,000 from a businessman under the pretext of securing him a parcel of land in a prime area in Accra. However, after receiving the funds, the transaction failed to materialize, and the complainant was allegedly unable to retrieve his money.

The prosecutor stated that multiple attempts were made by the complainant to reach Koo Ofori for a refund, but these efforts proved unsuccessful, prompting a formal complaint to the police. The actor was subsequently invited for questioning and charged.

In court, defense counsel argued that the matter was a civil transaction gone wrong, and that their client had no intention to defraud the complainant. The lawyer assured the court of the actor’s willingness to cooperate fully with investigations and attend all court sittings.

Fans of Koo Ofori, who has long been regarded as a household name in Ghanaian television comedy, have expressed mixed reactions, with some calling for patience until the full facts of the case emerge.

The case has been adjourned to June 3, 2025, for further hearing. Meanwhile, legal analysts say the case raises important issues about celebrity business dealings and the need for thorough documentation in high-value transactions.
