National Service Authority staff union condemns political interference, calls for institutional independence

Accra, Ghana – The staff union of the National Service Authority (NSA) has issued a strong statement condemning what it describes as increasing political interference in the day-to-day operations and appointments within the authority.

At a press conference held in Accra, union leaders voiced their concerns over undue political influence in decision-making, recruitment, and postings — actions they say undermine professionalism and the core mandate of the NSA.

"The National Service Authority must be allowed to function as a neutral institution serving national interest, not political whims," a spokesperson for the union stated.

The union emphasized that such interference demoralizes staff, disrupts service planning, and ultimately affects the quality of national service delivery across the country.

They have called on Parliament, civil society organizations, and governance watchdogs to support legislation that guarantees operational independence for the NSA, similar to other state bodies.

The union also appealed to the President and the Ministry of Education to take steps to safeguard the authority’s integrity, stressing that the National Service Scheme plays a critical role in Ghana’s human resource development and national cohesion.

✅ Conclusion:
The staff union’s bold call for institutional autonomy adds to growing calls for depoliticizing Ghana’s public service. Whether this demand will lead to structural reforms remains to be seen, but it marks a significant push for accountability and professionalism within the NSA.
