Parliament to Draft Lifestyle Audit Legislation – Speaker Bagbin Announces

Accra, Ghana – June 10, 2025
Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has announced that Ghana’s Parliament is preparing to draft a bill that will legalize lifestyle audits of public officials and other individuals of interest, in a move aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in public life.

Speaking at an anti-corruption forum in Accra, Bagbin emphasized the urgent need for stronger tools to track unexplained wealth and curb the misuse of public office for personal gain.

“Lifestyle audits are a powerful tool to detect corruption and illicit enrichment. Parliament is ready to support the passage of laws that will make such audits legal and enforceable,” he stated.

The proposed legislation will empower relevant state institutions, such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor, the Ghana Revenue Authority, and the Auditor-General, to review the lifestyles and assets of individuals relative to their lawful income and earnings.

This initiative comes amid growing public concern over high-profile cases of unexplained wealth, with citizens calling for more rigorous asset declaration and enforcement mechanisms.

Legal experts and anti-corruption campaigners have welcomed the Speaker’s commitment, describing lifestyle audits as a long-overdue intervention in the national anti-graft strategy.

Bagbin noted that the upcoming bill will align with global standards and will be subjected to public input through stakeholder consultations.

If passed, Ghana will join other African nations like Kenya and South Africa that have enacted lifestyle audit policies targeting public sector corruption.
