SONA Debate: Minority Opposes Proposal to Reduce Parliamentary Seats

During the ongoing State of the Nation Address (SONA) debate, the proposal to downsize Parliament was put forward as part of broader cost-cutting measures to ease Ghana’s fiscal burden. Proponents argue that a leaner legislature would reduce government expenditure and improve efficiency. However, the Minority contends that the proposal is politically motivated and could disenfranchise citizens, particularly those in underserved regions.

Speaking on behalf of the Minority, a senior legislator emphasized the importance of adequate representation in governance. “Reducing the number of MPs is not the solution to Ghana’s economic challenges. Instead, we should focus on prudent financial management, institutional reforms, and accountability,” he stated.

The debate has sparked widespread discussion, with civil society groups and political analysts weighing in on the potential impact of a smaller Parliament. While some support the idea as a cost-saving measure, others warn that it could weaken the legislative arm of government.

As discussions continue, the future of Ghana’s parliamentary structure remains a key issue, with both sides advocating for reforms that balance efficiency with democratic integrity.
