Voting is currently underway in the Ablekuma North constituency as residents return to the polls for a crucial parliamentary re-run. The Electoral Commission opened polls promptly at 7:00 a.m., and by 8:00 a.m., several polling centres had already recorded long queues, with voters eager to cast their ballots early.

The re-run, ordered due to irregularities and disputes following the December 2024 general election, is being closely watched both locally and nationally. Early reports from polling stations at Apenkwa, Odorkor, and Alajo indicate a calm atmosphere, with security personnel maintaining a visible but non-intrusive presence.

Officials from the Electoral Commission say that logistics arrived on time, and the biometric verification systems are functioning efficiently. Voters, many of whom arrived before dawn, expressed confidence in the process and hope for a fair outcome.

“I came as early as 5:30 a.m. because I want my voice to be heard,” said Mary Asiedu, a resident of Alajo. “So far, the process is smooth, and the EC officials are doing a good job.”

Political party agents have been stationed at various centres to monitor proceedings, and civil society organisations, including CODEO and the CDD-Ghana, have deployed observers to ensure transparency and adherence to electoral laws.

The Ghana Police Service has commended the peaceful conduct so far and urged voters to remain orderly throughout the day. ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, in a statement issued this morning, said: “We are here to maintain peace and protect voters’ rights. So far, no major incident has been recorded, and we hope this continues till the end of polls.”

The re-run is expected to close at 5:00 p.m., after which counting will begin in the presence of party representatives and observers. With both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) expressing confidence in victory, the outcome of this re-run could have implications for parliamentary dynamics and party morale ahead of the 2028 general elections.

As voting continues, all eyes remain on Ablekuma North, where democracy is once again being tested—and affirmed—at the ballot box.
