Afenyo-Markin Petitions IGP to Investigate Police Officer Over Alleged Assault

Deputy Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has officially petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to launch a full-scale investigation into an alleged assault involving a police officer and a civilian.

According to reports, the incident, which took place in the Effutu constituency, involved a police officer whose actions allegedly left a young man injured during a routine encounter. Eyewitnesses claim the officer used excessive force, sparking outrage among local residents.

In a formal petition submitted to the IGP, Afenyo-Markin described the incident as “deeply troubling” and “a threat to public confidence in law enforcement.” He emphasized the need for accountability within the Ghana Police Service and called on the top hierarchy to ensure the matter is not swept under the carpet.

“No one is above the law — not even those who are mandated to enforce it. If we want to build a just and fair society, then acts of unprovoked violence, especially by uniformed officers, must be thoroughly investigated,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He further appealed to the IGP to treat the matter with urgency and transparency, adding that “justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the matter. However, sources indicate that the Central Regional Police Command has been notified and may commence a preliminary inquiry in the coming days.

This development has reignited conversations around police brutality, human rights, and the importance of community policing in Ghana. Civil society groups and human rights advocates have also called for swift action to prevent a recurrence.
